3 stars for now, but with some adjustments and improvements I would be excited to give it 5 stars.
Definitely something I am interested in and has potential, but needs a bit more tweaking on the development side for me to be fully confident in it. It struggles a bit with timing, and, while the solution of using the captions to find the language you wish to filter out is clever, it is a pretty large limitation. With captions on, maybe it'll cut the audio at the right time, but I'm still going to read the word it's attempting to filter (or, if you have reading-age children, they'll still read it too). The opaque screen that flashes at each filter trigger is maybe supposed to aid with that, but I find it more distracting than anything. I'm unsure of the technical limitations of this, but a major upgrade would be to utilize an opaque "black bar" that targets and covers the specific words in the captions it intends on muting. But I'm not sure if that is a reasonable expectation for something like this.
I tested it in a few circumstances:
-On Youtube with the clip from Gone With The Wind ("Frankly, my dear, I don't give a ___") and I was impressed it did filter it at approximately the right time, except it does struggle with rewinding, often not filtering the word at all if you rewind the clip.
-On a different clip that included an F-bomb, and, to its credit, DID activate when the word appeared in the captions-- but only after the word was said.
-On a video with several instances of the word 'hell', and only filtered it out about half the time, and occasionally filtered out other words not included in the filter list.
I love the concept of this, and would love to use this in my personal life-- but at this time it is a bit too unreliable for who this extension is actually for (families with kids, triggered by certain language, Christians, etc). I hope the developer keeps working on this, I'll keep checking back.
