Browser Extension Ideas That Are Still Uncrowded in 2026

Uncrowded browser extension ideas hide in small categories and narrow jobs. What 61,820 crawled Chrome extensions show about crowding.

The short answer

Browser extension ideas are still uncrowded in small categories like Travel, Well-being and News, and in narrow jobs inside big sites. In our crawl, the Tools category had 10,627 extensions published in the past year, but only 223 of them reached 10K users. Smaller categories have fewer launches and less noise to beat.

  • 'Uncrowded' means few launches and a few real winners, not zero tools.
  • Tools saw 10,627 new extensions in a year; 223 reached 10K+ users.
  • Travel had 86 new launches in a year and just 161 extensions in total.
  • Well-being had 411 extensions, and the biggest had 300K users.

Every builder hunting browser extension ideas wants a quiet corner.

Then they launch into the loudest one anyway, usually a general tool in a category where thousands of near-identical listings went up in the past year alone.

What uncrowded browser extension ideas look like

An empty niche isn't a gift. Usually it's empty because nobody wants the thing. Uncrowded means a few winners and few launches. It proves demand while leaving room.

So the useful questions are: how many tools launched here lately, and how many of them got real traction? Our guide to finding Chrome extension ideas covers the wider method.

Crowding by category

On 3 Oct 2026 we counted extensions per Chrome Web Store category, then how many were first published in the past 365 days, and how many of those new ones reached 10K users.

CategoryExtensionsNew in past yearNew and 10K+ users

"First published" comes from the store listing. Users are the store's rounded counts.

To test this on real listings, start with the tab managers page.

What the table says

Tools is a lottery. About half of its crawled extensions launched within a year. Roughly 2 in 100 of those new ones crossed 10K users. You're fighting thousands of near-identical launches.

Small categories are quieter, and they aren't dead. Travel had only 161 extensions, yet several had 100K or more users. Points Path for Google Flights showed 100K users and was updated 4 days before our crawl. Directo, a hotel-deals tool, showed 400K.

Well-being has proof and space. Cat Gatekeeper had 300K users and a 4.64 rating. UnTrap for YouTube, which blocks Shorts and recommendations, had 100K. That's 411 extensions in the whole category.

A small category with one big winner is a signal. It says people want this kind of tool and haven't been flooded with options.

The other uncrowded corner: narrow jobs

Big sites are crowded at the top and empty in the corners. YouTube matched 1,928 extensions by name in our 3 Oct 2026 crawl. Yet "YouTube Row Fixer", which does one layout fix, had 100K users and a 4.79 rating.

Narrow jobs work because the big general tools ignore them. Say you notice that a site's export button only gives you a PDF. A tool that exports that one table to CSV has almost no rivals, and the people who need it need it every week.

  • One site, one annoyance. Fix a single thing people complain about.
  • One role, one workflow. Travel agents, tutors, or property managers on one site.
  • One format, one export. Get data out of a site that hides it.

Where crowding fools people

Some quiet niches are quiet for a reason. Household had 88 extensions and 3 with 10K+ users. That may be a gap, or it may be a job people do on their phones. Check where the work actually happens before you build.

We're biased, since we built it. The Categories view in Ext Watch shows these counts, with the date we saw them, and the new-launch list filters by category. Counts reflect what we've crawled so far, and the page says so.

Look for the quiet category with one loud winner. That's where the corner usually is.

Questions people ask

What browser extension should you build?

Pick a narrow job inside a site you use often, then check the store for tired or missing tools. Small categories with one big winner are worth a close look.

Is the Chrome Web Store too saturated?

The Tools category is very busy. Smaller categories and narrow jobs inside big sites are much quieter.

Do these ideas work in Firefox and Edge too?

Edge runs Chrome extensions, and Firefox supports the same WebExtensions model with some differences. Each store has its own audience and review process.
