The short answer
Chrome extension ideas Reddit users share are useful as a list of real complaints, but most of the ideas already exist in the store. Before building one, search the store, count how many extensions with 10K+ users already do it, and check whether those leaders are stale or poorly rated. A crowded idea can still work if the leaders look tired.
- Reddit threads show what annoys people. They don't show what's missing.
- 'Tab manager' matched 129 extensions in our crawl (3 Oct 2026).
- 'Pomodoro' matched 85, with 9 at 10K+ users and none rated weak.
- A thread's upvotes measure agreement, not willingness to pay.
Idea threads are fun.
Someone posts "there should be an extension that..." and fifty people agree. The catch: often there already is one, with 200K users.
Why Reddit ideas need a second look
People search "chrome extension ideas reddit" often enough that Google suggests the phrase. We saw it in autocomplete on 3 Oct 2026. That tells you builders go there for ideas. For a wider method, see our guide to finding Chrome extension ideas.
Then reality.
The trouble is that a thread is a pile of wishes. A wish isn't a gap. The person asking may not have searched the store. And agreeing in a comment costs nothing, while paying costs money.

Six chrome extension ideas Reddit keeps repeating, checked
We took six idea types you'll probably recognise and ran them against our crawl. The match is by extension name, so treat counts as a floor.
| Idea type | Name matches | 10K+ users | Weak leaders | No update in 2+ years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tab manager | 129 | 12 | 0 | 3 |
| Pomodoro timer | 85 | 9 | 0 | 0 |
| Dark mode | 200 | 42 | 7 | 12 |
| YouTube transcript | 155 | 24 | 2 | 2 |
| JSON viewer | 160 | 21 | 2 | 7 |
| Color picker | 97 | 23 | 0 | 7 |
"Weak leaders" means 10K+ users and a lifetime rating under 3.8 from 50+ ratings. "No update" uses the update date on the store listing.
Our focus and site blockers page keeps the same counts, each with the day we saw it.
How to read that table
Pomodoro is crowded and content. Nine sizeable extensions sat in our crawl, and not one of them was rated weak or had gone two years without an update, which is about as settled as a niche gets. A new timer has to win on something other than "it's a timer".
Dark mode is crowded and restless. Seven weak leaders and twelve stale ones among 42 big tools. Google Docs Dark Mode, for instance, showed 900K users, a 3.36 lifetime rating and no update in 1,132 days as of 3 Oct 2026. Users there are putting up with something.
Color pickers are old. Seven of 23 big ones haven't shipped an update in two years. HEX Color Picker had 20K users and a 4.84 rating, last updated 827 days before our crawl. People like it fine. Nobody is improving it.
Crowded plus tired beats empty. Empty usually means nobody wants it.
Turning a thread into a real lead
Say a commenter writes that every JSON viewer breaks on large files. That's more useful than "make a JSON viewer". It names a failure.
- Find the complaint, not the wishLook for "it breaks when" or "it stopped working after".
- Match it to a leaderWhich big extension are they talking about?
- Read that leader's 1-star reviewson the store page. See if the same failure repeats.
- Check the dateIf the leader hasn't updated in two years, the failure is likely still there.
That's the whole method. AI-written lists share the blind spot, as our idea generator test shows.
It takes an evening, maybe two if the leader has thousands of reviews and you get pulled into reading the long, angry ones that explain exactly what broke. Our guide on finding demand in 1-star reviews goes deeper on step three.
Where Ext Watch helps
We're biased here. Ext Watch runs the table above for any search, with users, rating and update gap, each dated. Its filters for "rating under 3.8" and "no update in 2 years" do the sorting. It doesn't read Reddit for you, and it doesn't store review text yet.
Next time a thread says "someone should build this", search the store first. Then read the complaints.
Questions people ask
Where do people share Chrome extension ideas on Reddit?
Builder and indie-hacker communities, plus subreddits for the site the extension would run on. The second kind gives better complaints.
Should you build an idea that already exists?
Yes, if the existing tools are stale, poorly rated, or miss one job users keep asking for. No, if the leaders are fresh and loved.
How do you know if an idea has demand?
Existing extensions with real user counts are the clearest proof. Google autocomplete for the phrase is a second, weaker sign.
