Micro SaaS ideas to copy: extensions with weak incumbents

Micro SaaS ideas to copy work best where a popular tool has low ratings and an old update date. Real examples from our 3 Oct 2026 crawl, and fair rules.

The short answer

The best ones to copy are where users already showed up but the current tool lets them down. Look for extensions with many users, a low rating backed by hundreds of ratings, and an old update date. With micro SaaS ideas to copy, copy the problem, never the code, name or design.

  • Copy the problem, then solve it better.
  • Weak means low stars across many ratings, plus an old update.
  • Five real examples below, observed 2 Oct 2026.
  • An old update date hints at a gap but doesn't prove abandonment.

Micro SaaS ideas to copy sound like cheating. In software it usually means something plainer: someone proved people want a thing, and you make a better version of it.

Done right, you borrow the demand and nothing else.

What makes an incumbent weak

A weak incumbent has users who'd leave if something better showed up. For the wider hunt, see what micro SaaS is and how to find micro SaaS ideas. You can see three hints of that in public data.

  • Low stars across many ratings. Hundreds of people agreeing is a signal. Six people isn't.
  • An old update date. The tool may have stopped getting fixes.
  • Repeated complaints. The same missing feature in review after review.

Five micro SaaS ideas to copy, from our crawl

These are mid-sized tools from smaller publishers. All had at least 100 ratings, under 3.8 stars, and a listing update over a year old.

ExtensionUsersRating (ratings)Days since listing update
"Screen Recorder"400,000+3.7 (1,063)1,059
"OP Auto Clicker"400,000+2.3 (464)1,262
"Save as PDF"300,000+3.2 (2,019)477
"Go Back With Backspace"300,000+3.2 (1,370)1,047
"Set password for your browser"300,000+2.9 (1,091)617

Observed 3 Oct 2026. User counts are the store's rounded buckets. Ratings are lifetime averages, not recent ones.

These aren't recommendations to build. They're examples of the pattern. Each still needs a pricing check and a read of its reviews.

Which ones are worth a second look

A free utility with a million fans can be a poor business. Save as PDF and Screen Recorder sit closer to work, where people sometimes pay. An auto clicker might attract users with very different intentions. To read complaints properly, see finding demand in 1-star reviews.

Copy the problems of people who'd pay to have them solved.

How to copy without crossing a line

  1. Write your own code from scratch.
  2. Pick a name nobody will confuse with the original.
  3. Make your own icon, screenshots and description.
  4. Solve at least one complaint the original ignores.
  5. Read the store's policies on impersonation and spam.

The Chrome Web Store removes listings that copy another product's identity. That risk isn't worth the shortcut.

Finding more like these

We're biased, because surfacing this pattern is what Ext Watch does. Our Openings view lists tools with demand and weak spots, each number dated. You can also run the same filter by hand, one category at a time.

More weak incumbents from the same crawl

The pattern shows up across categories. Here are more listings from our list of openings on 3 Oct 2026, each with a big audience, a low rating and a long gap since the last update.

ExtensionUsersRating (ratings)Days since update
PDF Viewer1,000,0003.32 (2,723)705
GIPHY for Chrome200,0003.47 (364)1,240
Movie maker MovieStudio video editor90,0003.07 (529)761
Auto Clicker200,0002.28 (971)193

Auto Clicker is a useful contrast. It shipped an update 193 days before, so it isn't quiet, but its rating sits at 2.28 on nearly a thousand ratings. Active but unloved can be as much of an opening as quiet.

A review-reading sheet

Reading reviews is the step that turns a row into an idea. Keep it structured.

ComplaintTimes seenPaid fix possible?

Read the 30 newest reviews. Add a row for each new complaint and a tally for each repeat. When you're done, sort by "times seen". The top three rows are your feature list, and the "paid fix" column tells you which ones could carry a price.

Pricing against a free tool

Many weak incumbents are free. That doesn't mean your version must be.

  1. Keep the core job free, so you can win users from the old tool.
  2. Charge for the fix people complain about most, if it costs you to run or saves real time.
  3. Say plainlywhat's free and what's paid on the listing.
  4. Price for work users, who tend to pay to remove daily friction.

Our guide to monetization models covers the options.

A launch plan for a better version

A better tool still has to be found. Here's a plan that uses the old tool's weaknesses.

  • Name the job plainly, the same phrase people search for.
  • Lead with the fix in your first screenshot and first line.
  • Answer questions in places where users complain about the old tool.
  • Ship fast fixes in your first months, so your update date stays fresh.

Users who left a one-star review on the old tool are often the first to try a new one. Treat their complaints as your roadmap, and reply when you've fixed them. Our Openings list shows more listings like these, each with the date we checked.

Copy ideas from outside extensions too

Weak incumbents aren't only in the store. The same pattern shows up in web apps, spreadsheets and plugins for other tools.

Where to lookWeak-incumbent sign
Browser extensionsLow rating on many ratings, old update
WordPress pluginsMany installs, old "tested up to" version
Spreadsheet add-onsComplaints about speed or limits
Desktop utilitiesNo update for a new OS version

The method is the same everywhere: find proof of demand, find proof of frustration, then build the fix. Extensions just make the proof easy to see, because users, ratings and update dates are public.

How to tell if users will switch

Frustration alone doesn't move people. Switching has a cost, even for a free tool.

  1. Is the pain daily?People switch to fix daily annoyances, not rare ones.
  2. Is switching easy?Tools with no saved data are easier to replace.
  3. Is there a clear trigger?A broken update often pushes people to look.
  4. Can they find you?Use the same plain phrase they search for.

If the answer to all four is yes, the old tool's users are within reach. If switching means losing years of saved data, offer an import.

When not to copy

Some weak incumbents aren't worth chasing.

  • The site it works on is hostile to extensions and changes often.
  • The job is fading, like tools for a service that's shutting down.
  • Users chose it for a reason you can't match, like a free tier backed by a big company.

A quick read of recent reviews usually tells you which case you're in. Our niche pages list every listing in a group, so you can check several at once. Our guide to sizing competition shows how to check the rest in ten minutes.

One small step

Pick one row from the table and read its ten newest reviews tonight. Note anything that comes up three times.

The better version starts there.

Questions people ask

Is it legal to copy a SaaS idea?

Ideas generally aren't protected, but code, names, logos and copy are. Build your own version and talk to a lawyer if you're unsure.

Can you clone a Chrome extension?

You can build one that solves the same problem. The store's policies forbid impersonating or copying another listing.

Why copy instead of inventing?

Because an existing tool with users proves demand. Inventing means proving demand from scratch.

How do I compete with a free tool?

Do one thing much better, and charge for what costs you money to run. Many users will pay to fix a daily annoyance the free tool ignores.

How long does it take to build a better version?

For a focused extension, weeks rather than months. The research and listing work often take as long as the code.
