The short answer
Profitable Chrome extension ideas start with a job someone already pays to get done, inside a site they open every day. For a solo developer, the best openings are busy niches where the leading extensions are stale or poorly rated, and where buyers are businesses, not bargain hunters. Check those three things before you write code.
- Profit comes from the job, not the feature list.
- Seller, recruiter and marketing tools have buyers who expense software.
- In our crawl, 7,967 extensions had 10K+ users (3 Oct 2026).
- Only 617 of those had a lifetime rating under 3.5 from 50+ ratings.
Most lists of profitable chrome extension ideas hand you a feature.
A feature doesn't pay rent. A person with a budget and a recurring headache does.
What makes an idea profitable, in plain terms
To find the niche first, use our guide to finding Chrome extension ideas. A profitable extension needs someone who already spends money on the problem. Sellers on Amazon or Etsy pay for tools because a better listing means more sales. Recruiters pay because time on LinkedIn is their job.
Compare that with a dark mode toggle.
Lots of people want one, and plenty of good free versions already exist, so asking anyone to hand over a card every month for it is a much harder sell.
Say you're choosing between a YouTube speed control and an Etsy listing checker. The speed control has the bigger audience. The Etsy tool has the buyer with a reason to pay. Pick the buyer, then size the audience.

Four filters to run on any idea
| Filter | What to look for | Example from our 3 Oct crawl |
|---|---|---|
| A paying audience | Business users, sellers, freelancers | PrettyMerch for Merch by Amazon: 40K users, gumroad.com in its manifest |
| Daily use | A site people open every workday | 93 Gmail-named extensions had 10K+ users |
| Tired leaders | Low rating or a long gap since the last update | Google Docs Dark Mode: 900K users, 3.36 lifetime rating |
| A clear upgrade | Heavy use worth charging for | Tally, a Claude token counter: 100K users, polar.sh in its manifest |
User counts there are the store's rounded figures. Ratings are lifetime averages, not recent ones.
Where the payment signals actually show up
Google ended payments in the store years ago. Paid extensions bill on their own site, through Stripe, Paddle, Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy, Polar or ExtensionPay.
So the listing is a weak clue. Our crawl found a payment signal on just 572 of 61,820 extensions. That's far too low to be true of the store, and we know why: big paid tools like Grammarly sell on their own pricing page and leave no trace in the listing.
Profitable chrome extension ideas where solo builders win
These aren't guarantees. They're places where a small team can be better at one narrow job.
- Marketplace sellers. Amazon had 74 extensions with 10K+ users in our 3 Oct 2026 crawl, and 11 Amazon-named tools showed a payment signal. That's a lot for one site.
- Inbox work. Gmail tools reach people at their desk. Three of the 93 big ones showed a payment signal, which says more about our detector than the niche.
- AI side tools. Tally, a token counter for Claude, reached 100K users. Small helpers around big AI products are a live pattern.
- Screenshots and capture. Chrome Capture, with 300K users, carries a paddle.com licence host. Capture is crowded, so you need a sharper angle.
Narrow beats broad for a solo builder. "Screenshot tool" is a war. "Screenshot tool that writes bug reports into Linear" is a product.
What to skip
Some ideas look big and pay badly.
- Ad blockersHuge user counts, strong free leaders, and buyers who hate paying.
- Company-pushed toolsSign-in and security extensions that employers deploy can show tens of millions of users with low ratings. Users didn't pick them and can't switch away, so the rating says little about the opening.
- Video downloadersBig demand, constant policy risk.
How Ext Watch fits in
We're biased, since we build it. Ext Watch shows rating, users and update gaps per niche, each with the date we saw it. The Openings list filters for busy niches with tired leaders. It's one input, and the pricing-page check above still matters.
For the step after this, read how to validate an idea before writing code and extension business ideas with paying users.
Open three pricing pages tonight. The buyer usually shows up there first.
Questions people ask
Are Chrome extensions profitable?
Some are. They bill on their own websites, so the store listing rarely shows the money. Look at the publisher's pricing page to see whether a niche pays.
What's the most profitable kind of Chrome extension?
Tools for people who earn money in the browser, like sellers, recruiters and marketers. They have a budget and a daily reason to use the tool.
Can one developer build a profitable extension?
Yes, if the scope is narrow. One job, done well, for one kind of buyer, is a realistic solo project.
