Chrome Extension Market Size: What We Can and Can't Measure

Chrome extension market size, measured honestly: how many listings exist, how many users they report.

The short answer

The Chrome extension market size you can actually measure is listings and installs, not money. The store's sitemap listed 370,013 item IDs on 2 Oct 2026. Of the 61,820 extensions we'd crawled by 3 Oct, 7,967 reported 10,000 users or more. Revenue isn't published anywhere, so any single 'market is worth $X' figure is a guess.

  • Count of listings: measurable, from the public sitemap.
  • Users per extension: measurable, but rounded by the store.
  • Revenue: not published, so only estimates exist.
  • Our numbers cover 21% of store IDs so far, and we say so.

People ask about Chrome extension market size for two reasons. Fair enough. They want to know if the pond is big enough, or they want a number for a pitch deck. Those need different answers.

What Chrome extension market size means

There are three layers, and they get harder to measure as you go down. Each field is explained in Chrome Web Store stats.

LayerCan you measure it?Where it comes from
Number of listingsYesChrome Web Store sitemap
Users per listingMostlyStore detail page, rounded above 100K
Ratings per listingYesStore detail page
Revenue per listingNoNot published by Google
Total market revenueNoOnly third-party guesses

Listings and users are public. Revenue isn't. Google doesn't run payments for extensions anymore (see Google's developer docs for how the store handles payments), so money moves through each developer's own Stripe, Paddle or similar account.

Nobody outside sees it, which means every revenue total you've read for this market was assembled from surveys, public filings of a few big companies and a generous multiplier. Guesswork.

The numbers we have, with dates

Here's what our own crawl shows as of 3 Oct 2026. It covers 78,872 of the 370,013 IDs in the sitemap, about 21%. The sitemap also includes themes and apps, so not all 370,013 are extensions.

Measure (crawled extensions only)Value
Extensions with data61,820

Median users857
10,000+ users7,967
100,000+ users1,818
1,000,000+ users346

That median is the number to sit with. Half of extensions have under about 900 users. The market is a long tail with a small, crowded head.

The Tools category page has the dated counts if you want to check this yourself.

Why revenue totals are guesses

You'll see confident revenue figures for the "browser extension market" in paid research reports. Ask how they were made. Usually it's a survey of a few public companies scaled up by a multiplier.

Treat any revenue total without a stated method as marketing.

The useful question isn't the market total anyway. It's whether people pay for tools in your niche. You answer that one extension at a time, by checking whether competitors charge, on their own pricing pages.

How to size your own slice

Say you're thinking about a tab manager. Skip the store-wide figure and do this instead.

  1. Search the category and list every close competitor.
  2. Note each one's users and rating count, with the date.
  3. Open each competitor's website and check for a pricing page.
  4. Count how many charge, and roughly what.
  5. That list is your market, and it fits in a spreadsheet. The market research method walks through it.

In Ext Watch, the category pages and filters do the first two steps for crawled listings. We're still building the pricing-page check, so for now, step three is manual.

For the raw counts, see how many Chrome extensions exist.

The pond is big. Your slice of it is the only part worth measuring.

Questions people ask

How big is the Chrome extension market?

Measured by listings, the store sitemap held 370,013 item IDs on 2 Oct 2026, including themes and apps. Measured by revenue, nobody knows, because it isn't published.

How many extensions make money?

There's no public count. You can see which ones show a pricing page or payment provider, but that takes checking each publisher's site.

Is the Chrome extension market getting bigger?

New listings keep arriving. As of 3 Oct 2026, 21,061 extensions in our crawled set show a 2026 publish date, but our crawl may have reached newer items first, so that number leans high.
