The short answer

It depends on what you count. The Chrome Web Store sitemap listed 370,013 item IDs on 2 Oct 2026, but that total mixes extensions with themes and apps. Of the 80,429 items we had full data for by 3 Oct, 65,655 were extensions, about 82 percent, and only 346 of those had a million users or more.

  • Sitemap IDs on 2 Oct 2026: 370,013, mixing extensions, themes and apps.
  • In our crawl of 80,429 items with data, 65,655 were extensions (about 82 percent).
  • Almost half of crawled extensions, 31,324, report under 1,000 users.
  • Only 346 report a million users or more, and 33 report ten million or more.

How many Chrome extensions are there? The honest answer is a range, because the store's own total mixes extensions with themes and apps, and most of what is listed gets almost no use. This page gives the official-ish total, what our own crawl shows inside it, how many extensions people actually use, and how to quote the number without misleading anyone.

All numbers come from our crawl unless stated. For what each store field means, see Chrome Web Store stats explained.

How many Chrome extensions are there in total?

The Chrome Web Store publishes a sitemap that lists every item page it wants search engines to find. Counting the IDs in it on 2 Oct 2026 gave 370,013. It is the closest thing to an official total, because Google does not publish a count of its own.

Not every ID is an extension. Themes, apps and extensions share the same ID system. A raw count of sitemap IDs gives a colour theme for your new tab page the same weight as a full password manager. Some IDs also point to listings that have since been removed but not yet dropped from the sitemap.

So 370,013 is a ceiling for "things in the store", not a count of extensions.

What our crawl shows inside that total

We had crawled 82,872 of those IDs by 3 Oct 2026, about 22 percent. Here is how they broke down.

Item typeCount (crawled, 3 Oct 2026)Share of items with data
Extensions65,65582%
Themes10,59013%
Apps4,0935%
Items with full data80,429100%
Total IDs crawled82,872

The extensions spread across 18 store categories. The biggest by far is Tools with 22,452 extensions, then Workflow & Planning with 13,975 and Developer Tools with 6,550. The smallest is Household with 97. You can browse all of them in the extension directory.

How many Chrome extensions are actually used?

A listing existing is not the same as people using it. Among the 65,655 crawled extensions, as of 3 Oct 2026:

Under 10019,61530%

of which 10 million or more330.05%

The store is huge, and almost all of it is quiet.

Nearly half of all crawled extensions, 31,324, report under 1,000 users. At the top, a few dozen extensions hold a large share of all installs. The largest in our crawl were Adobe Acrobat at about 337 million users, McAfee WebAdvisor at 158 million, Application Launcher For Drive at 96 million, and AdBlock at 64 million. Grammarly, Google Translate and Adblock Plus were each around 38 to 40 million.

These user counts are rounded by the store, so read them as size labels. The full dated breakdown is in Chrome extension statistics 2026, and a list of the largest is in the top Chrome extensions of 2026.

Which kinds of extensions are most common?

Store categories are broad, so we also sort extensions into narrower niches by what they do. On 3 Oct 2026 the largest niches in our crawl looked like this:

NicheExtensionsWith 10,000+ usersAverage rating
AI assistants4,5814934.37
PDF tools1,2971984.10
Translators1,1651724.25
SEO extensions745794.56
Web scrapers541554.19
Focus and site blockers446474.37
Price trackers395894.43
Ad blockers3551404.14

Two things stand out. First, AI assistants are now the most crowded niche by a wide margin, with more than three times as many extensions as the next one. Second, crowded does not mean popular. Ad blockers have fewer than a tenth as many extensions as AI assistants, yet 140 of them have 10,000 users or more, a far higher share.

The share of listings that reach 10,000 users is a better guide to demand than the raw count. In ad blockers it is about 39 percent. In AI assistants it is about 11 percent, close to the store-wide 12 percent. For more on reading these numbers, see how to judge competition in a niche.

Why does the count keep changing?

Listings come and go every day:

  • New listings arrive. In our crawled set, 24,891 extensions showed a 2026 first published date as of 3 Oct 2026. Our crawler may have reached newer items first, so this leans high for the sample.
  • Old listings go quiet. 11,026 extensions in our crawl had not been updated in more than two years.
  • Listings get removed. Google removes items that break its program policies, and the move to Manifest V3 retired many older extensions. Only 2 extensions in our crawl still declared Manifest V2.

To see what is new right now, our new launches list shows the latest arrivals with their first numbers.

How to count Chrome extensions yourself

If you need your own number, for a deck or a research paper, here is the method we use:

  1. Download the sitemapThe store's sitemap index links to several files of item URLs. Collect every URL.
  2. Pull out the IDsEach item URL ends in a 32-letter ID. Remove duplicates.
  3. Count and date itThat is your total, true on the day you downloaded it.
  4. Sample the item pagesVisit a random sample, a few thousand is enough, slowly and within what robots.txt allows.
  5. Label each oneExtension, theme or app, plus the user count.
  6. Scale with careIf your sample is truly random, the shares will hold for the whole store. If it is not, say so.

Our full method, including how we handle rounded user counts, is on the methodology page.

Why do other sources give different numbers?

Search for this question and you will find answers from about 100,000 to well over 200,000. Most of the gap comes from four choices:

  • What counts as an extension. Some counts include themes and apps, some don't. That alone can move the number by a fifth or more.
  • When it was counted. The store adds and removes listings every day. A count from 2022 includes thousands of Manifest V2 extensions that have since gone.
  • Which listings are visible. Some listings are unlisted, only reachable by direct link, and never appear in search. Others are limited to certain countries.
  • How the count was made. A sitemap count, a crawl of search results and a third party database will each give a different answer, because each one sees a different slice of the store.

None of these numbers is wrong, as long as the source says what it counted and when. The problem starts when a number is copied without its date and keeps circulating for years. If you see a total with no date and no source, treat it as a guess.

Our own figure will change as the crawl continues. Every number on this page carries its date for that reason, and we update the page when the crawl reaches new milestones rather than moving the date without new data.

How should you quote the number?

Any count is only true on its date. When you quote one, write the date and the source right next to it, every time.

Avoid round claims like "over 200,000 extensions" without a date and source. They spread from article to article long after they stop being true. If you need a used-extensions figure, "about 8,000 extensions with 10,000 or more users in a crawl of 65,655 extensions, 3 Oct 2026" is far more useful to a reader than the raw total.

What does the count mean for builders?

If you are thinking of building an extension, the count is less scary than it looks. Most of those 370,013 listings are themes, apps, or extensions with fewer than 1,000 users. The real competition in any niche is usually a few dozen listings.

A new extension does not compete with 370,013 listings. It competes with the handful that a buyer sees when they search for the job it does, and with whatever they already have installed. That is why sizing a niche beats sizing the store. Our guide to Chrome extension market size shows how, and the niche pages list the extensions in each one with their users and ratings. The AI assistants niche alone held 4,581 extensions on 3 Oct 2026, while price trackers held 395.

Count the listings, then count the ones people use. The second number is the one that matters.

Questions people ask

How many Chrome extensions are there in 2026?

The Chrome Web Store sitemap listed 370,013 item IDs on 2 Oct 2026. That count includes themes and apps as well as extensions. In our own crawl of 80,429 items with data, about 82 percent were extensions, but our crawl order is not random, so the true extension total is uncertain until the crawl finishes.

How many Chrome extensions have over 1 million users?

In our crawl of 65,655 extensions, 346 showed a million users or more as of 3 Oct 2026, about half of one percent. Only 33 showed ten million or more. The largest was Adobe Acrobat at 337 million, followed by McAfee WebAdvisor at 158 million. User counts are rounded by the store.

What share of Chrome extensions are small?

Most of them. In our crawl, 31,324 of 65,655 extensions reported under 1,000 users and 19,615 reported under 100. Another 9,637 showed no user count at all. Only 7,967, about 12 percent, reported 10,000 users or more. A huge store with a long quiet tail is the normal shape.

How many new Chrome extensions are published each year?

In our crawled set, 24,891 extensions showed a 2026 first published date as of 3 Oct 2026. Our crawler may have reached newer items first, so treat that as a rough figure for the sample, not the whole store. Many new listings get few users and some are removed within months.

Is the number of Chrome extensions going up or down?

New listings keep arriving, but old ones are also removed for policy reasons or abandoned. In our crawl, 11,026 extensions had not been updated in more than two years. The move to Manifest V3 removed many older extensions, so the raw total says little about how healthy the store is.

How do you count Chrome extensions yourself?

Download the store sitemap, count the item IDs, then visit a sample of item pages to see which are extensions, themes or apps. Go slowly and keep to pages robots.txt allows. Write the date next to every number, because the sitemap changes every day as listings are added and removed.
