The short answer
These numbers come from our own crawl of 65,655 extensions, dated 3 Oct 2026. The median extension has about 760 users, a third have no ratings at all, and 346 report a million users or more. Read every one of these Chrome extension statistics as \"of crawled extensions\", since our crawl hasn't reached every store ID.
- Median users: 857.
- 20,791 crawled extensions have zero ratings.
- 21,401 haven't updated in over a year.
- Nearly all crawled listings run Manifest V3.
Most Chrome extension statistics roundups recycle the same old figures with no date. These come from one crawl on 3 Oct 2026, with the method written next to them.
When the crawl grows, the numbers will move, and we'll update this page with the new date.
Users
| Users reported | Extensions (of 65,655 crawled) |
|---|---|
| 1,000,000+ | 346 |
| 100,000+ | 1,818 |
| 10,000+ | 7,967 |
| Under 1,000 | 31,324 |
| Under 100 | 19,615 |
| No user count shown | 9,637 |
Field definitions are in our Chrome Web Store stats guide.
Most extensions are small. 31,324 of them, close to half, report under 1,000 users, which is about the audience of a single busy subreddit thread rather than anything you could call a business.
The store rounds big counts into buckets like "300,000+", so the top rows are floors, not exact figures.
Ratings
As of 3 Oct 2026:
- 23,727 crawled extensions have no ratings.
- 831 have 1,000 ratings or more.
- Among extensions with 20+ ratings, the average score is 4.22 stars. How to read installs and ratings explains why.
- Of the 4,129 with 100+ ratings, 1,932 sit at 4.5 or higher and 232 sit below 3.
To test this on real listings, start with the Tools category page.

Updates and Manifest V3
As of 3 Oct 2026:
- 21,431 of 65,625 extensions with a known update date haven't shipped an update in over a year.
- Among extensions with 10,000+ users, 2,859 of 7,967 are past that one-year mark.
- 65,623 of the 65,655 report Manifest V3. Two report V2.
That last number tracks Google's Manifest V2 phase-out. A big listing with no update in a year is worth a closer look, not a verdict. Some tools are simply finished. Done is allowed.

Categories
| Category | Extensions | 100K+ users |
|---|---|---|
| Tools | 22,452 | 380 |
| Workflow & Planning | 13,868 | 631 |
| Developer Tools | 6,306 | 175 |
| Just for Fun | 2,805 | 55 |
| Accessibility | 2,449 | 106 |
On 3 Oct 2026, Tools was the biggest bucket by count. Workflow & Planning, with 13,868 extensions, actually holds more of the big ones, 631 with 100,000+ users against 380 in Tools. Size isn't spread evenly.
Permissions
What extensions ask to touch says a lot about the store. Counts from our 3 Oct 2026 crawl:
| Permission | Extensions asking |
|---|---|
| storage | 48,219 |
| activeTab | 22,097 |
| scripting | 20,910 |
| tabs | 18,120 |
| Access to all sites | 11,272 |
| cookies | 4,776 |
| history | 528 |
About one in six extensions asked for access to every site. That's the permission users and reviewers look at hardest. Our guide to permission changes explains each one.
Payments
The store has no checkout, so paid tools point elsewhere. Here are the payment hosts listings pointed to on 3 Oct 2026.
| Host | Listings |
|---|---|
| ExtensionPay | 164 |
| Gumroad | 138 |
| Lemon Squeezy | 111 |
| Polar | 47 |
| Stripe (direct) | 36 |
In total, 641 extensions showed some paid signal on the listing. That's about 1%, and it undercounts badly, since big paid tools usually charge on their own sites without saying so in the listing.
New launches
Among extensions in our crawl, 11,333 showed a first-published date in September 2026. Only 45 of them had reached 1,000 users by 3 Oct, and 3 had reached 10,000. The median new listing in the 30 days before 3 Oct had 4 users.
That's the base rate for a launch. Our New launches page shows the young listings that already have an audience.
Niches
Categories are broad. Niches are closer to what people search for. A few we track, as of 3 Oct 2026:
| Niche | Extensions | With 10k+ users | Avg rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI assistants | 4,581 | 493 | 4.37 |
| PDF tools | 1,297 | 198 | 4.10 |
| Translators | 1,165 | 172 | 4.25 |
| SEO extensions | 745 | 79 | 4.56 |
| Ad blockers | 355 | 140 | 4.14 |
How to cite these numbers
If you quote anything here, keep it accurate.
- Include the date, 3 Oct 2026.
- Say "of crawled extensions", not "of all extensions".
- Mark rounded user countsas floors.
- Link this page, so readers can see the method.
We'll refresh this page as the crawl grows, with the new date at the top.
Ratings in more detail
Star averages hide a lot. Here's the spread among the 18,079 extensions with 10 or more ratings on 3 Oct 2026.
| Rating band | Extensions | Share |
|---|---|---|
| 4.5 and up | 8,259 | 46% |
| 4.0 to 4.49 | 4,810 | 27% |
| 3.5 to 3.99 | 2,560 | 14% |
| 3.0 to 3.49 | 1,299 | 7% |
| Under 3.0 | 1,151 | 6% |
The median was 4.42. A 5.0 is usually a small sample: of the 16,181 extensions with a perfect average, 14,727 had fewer than 10 ratings. Our guide to store ratings explains what a 0.1 change means.
The most rated extensions
Rating count is the hardest number to fake at scale. The most rated extensions in our crawl on 3 Oct 2026 were Adblock for Youtube (382,347 ratings), Hola VPN (368,045) and AdBlock (290,298). Ad blockers held four of the top eight spots.
Big audiences, low ratings
Size and satisfaction don't always go together. Of the 346 extensions with 1,000,000+ users, 156 rated under 4.0. Many are tools people got through work or a bundle rather than choosing. Our Openings list shows big tools with weak ratings and long gaps since their last update.
What changed since our first crawl
This page first used counts from our earliest crawl. Since then the crawl has grown, so the numbers moved.
| Measure | First crawl | 3 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Extensions with store data | 61,820 | 65,655 |
| Median users | 857 | About 760 |
| No ratings | 20,791 | 23,727 |
The median fell because the crawl reached more small listings, not because extensions shrank. That's the reason every figure here carries a date and the words "of crawled extensions".
What these Chrome extension statistics can't tell you
Not growth, yet. Our own history started on 2 Oct 2026, and growth needs weeks of repeat snapshots. They also can't tell you revenue, which Google doesn't publish. If a stat page claims either from a single snapshot, ask how.
Our methodology page lists the coverage limits.
For what these counts mean for sizing a niche, see Chrome extension market size.
Dated numbers age well. Undated ones just age.
