The short answer

Chrome Web Store ranking isn't published as a formula. Google's own guidance points to relevant listing text and good user signals like ratings. Our crawl adds a pattern: bigger extensions almost always have ratings and more often show three or more screenshots.

  • Google doesn't publish its search ranking formula.
  • Its listing guide stresses clear text and good images.
  • In our 3 Oct 2026 crawl, 53.6% of extensions under 1,000 users had no ratings.
  • Above 100,000 users, under 1% had none.

Anyone claiming to know the exact Chrome Web Store ranking formula is guessing. Here's what's public, and then what 61,820 listings we crawled on 3 Oct 2026 show when you line them up by size and look for the habits the big ones share.

What Google says about Chrome Web Store ranking

Google's developer docs give two useful pages. The discovery page explains how people find extensions, and the listing guide explains how to make a strong listing.

The short version is familiar to anyone who's done app stores. Describe the tool in plain words and keep users happy. Editorial picks also exist, chosen by people at Google, as our Featured badge post explains. The writing side is in Chrome Web Store SEO.

What big listings share

We grouped every crawled extension by its user count and looked at a few listing traits.

Two things. Bigger listings nearly always have ratings. And they show more screenshots.

The Tools category page shows the dated counts behind this section.

What this doesn't prove

This is a snapshot, so it can't show cause. Maybe screenshots help a listing climb. Maybe big teams simply make more screenshots. Both fit.

The median rating also falls as listings grow. Small extensions get rated by early fans. Big ones get rated by everyone, including the people who installed something by accident, the people whose favourite button moved after an update, and the people who were simply unhappy.

Read a lower rating on a bigger tool as normal, up to a point. Our ratings guide shows the bands.

What you can control

Where Ext Watch fits

We're biased, being the team behind it. Ext Watch shows where an extension sits by users within its category, and the day that rank was seen. The categories page lists each one.
